PREPARING FOR YOUR EXAM

Below you will find the necessary preparations for your radiographic procedure. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call us. Please download any consent forms necessary if you are having an MRI, CT or IVP Contrast.



UltrasounD

Please allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for all ultrasound exams.


The following exams do not require any preparation:

  • Appendix
  • Breast (right) (left) or (bilat)
  • Obstetrical (34+ weeks)
  • Scrotal w/limited Doppler
  • Thyroid/ Appendix
  • Venous Extremity (right) (left) or (bilat)
  • Infant Hips
  • Infant Head

For all exams listed below: Drink 24 ounces of water 1 hour before your appointment time. Please arrive with a very full bladder.

  • Obstetrical (4-33 weeks) LMP
  • OB follow-up
  • OB w/Doppler
  • Pelvic
  • Pelvic with endovaginal
  • Retroperitoneal (to include kidneys, aorta, IVC and bladder

For all exams listed below: Do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to your exam including smoking or chewing gum. You may take your medication as prescribed.

  • Complete Abdominal (e.g. liver, gallbladder, kidneys, aorta, pancreas, spleen)


Diagnostic X-ray

Please allow 1 hour for all exams unless otherwise noted.

The following exams do not require any preparation:

  • Arthrogram
  • Hip Injection
  • Shoulder Injection
  • VCUG

Please follow the instructions for your specific exam:

Esophagram:
Light meals are permitted up to 2 hours before your exam.

Upper Gastrointestinal Study – UGI:
Nothing by mouth after 10:00 p.m the night before the study. Chewing gum and smoking are not allowed.

Small bowel follow through – SBFT:
Nothing by mouth after 10:00 p.m. the night before the study. Chewing gum and smoking are not allowed. The length of this exam is determined by how quickly or slowly your body passes the barium through to the large bowel. Please allow 1 – 6 hours for this exam.

Barium Enema:
The preparation for the barium enema begins the day before your scheduled appointment time. You will be given a prep kit by your doctor or you will be asked to pick one up at Longview Radiologists. It is very important you follow all the instructions in the prep kit.

IVP:
No solid food 2 hours prior to your exam, water is okay. Please allow a minimum of 1-2 hours for the exam. Contrast material will be injected into your vein.



Magnetic Reasonance Imaging (MRI):

Wear comfortable, metal free clothing for your exam. Do not wear excessive make-up, bobby pins, watches, jewelry, hearing aids, metal devices, etc. All patients may take medications. Some exams may include injecting contrast material into your veins. Allow approximately 1 hour for the exam.

MRI, Abdomen or Pelvis:
No food or drink 2 hours prior to exam.

MRCP
No food or drink after midnight the night before the study.

COMPUTED Tomography (CT)

Wear comfortable, metal free clothing for your exam. Some exams may include injecting
contrast material into your veins. Allow approximately 1 hour for the exam.

  • CT, Orbits w/o contrast
  • CT, Maxillofacial w/o contrast
  • CT, Soft tissue neck w/o contrast

For all exams listed below:No solid foods 4 hours prior to exam. Drink at least 1 quart of water prior to your exam unless otherwise instructed by your physician. Drink the entire contents of the liquid you received for this exam 2 hours prior to your scheduled appointment time.

  • CT, Abdomen to Iliac Crest
  • CT, Pelvis
For all exams listed below:No solid foods 4 hours prior to exam. Drink at least 1 quart of water prior to your exam
  • CT, Head w/contrast
  • CT, Orbits w/contrast
  • CT, Maxillofacial w/contrast
  • CT, Soft tissue neck w/contrast
  • CT, Chest
  • CT, Urogram
  • CTA Chest w/contrast for PE
  • CTA Chest and Abdomen w/o and w/ contrast for dissection and/or aneurysm
  • CTA Neck
  • CTA Head
  • CTA Runoff


THORACENTESIS:

No special preparation is needed before the test. A chest x-ray may be performed before and after the test. A current INR result is required and must be less than 30 days old.



PARACENTESIS:

There is no preparation for the exam, but be sure to tell your doctor if you:

  • Are taking any medication.
  • Are allergic to any medicines, including numbing medicines.
  • Have any bleeding problems or are taking blood thinners, such as aspirin, nonsteroidal antiflammatory drugs, or warfarin (Coumadin)
  • Are or might be pregnant.
  • A current INR result is required and must be less than 30 days old.


PAIN MANAGEMENT INJECTIONS:

If you are scheduled for an Epidural Steroid, Facet, or Sacroiliac Injection and are taking any blood thinners such as Plavix, Coumadin, or adult aspirin stop the medication three days prior to your injection.
